Electrolux Design Lab announces its winner!
The biggest news of the week (in the world of kitchen appliances) is the result of the Electrolux Design lab competition. And the winner is… Cocoon!
Invented by Swedish design student, Rickard Hederstierna, from Lund Institute of Technology in Sweden Cocoon “creates” meat and fish. Rickard’s idea would feed the world (wouldn’t Sir Geldoff be proud) – it was conceived in response to the world’s ever growing population and our desire to eat meat and fish.
The innovation uses science to create food, preparing genetically engineered and pre-packaged meat and fish dishes with radio frequency identification signals – similar to cooking microwavable popcorn. It then reduces the need for intensive farming and fishing as well as the mass transportation of food, clearing of land and distortion of ecosystems.
What did the jury say? “Cocoon addresses a controversial issue that is very real: humankind’s continued desire to eat meat and fish. A great design concept polarizes opinion, and this is exactly what Cocoon achieves by exploring this issue. An inviting, tactile design, the Cocoon resembles a gemstone with a metal accent reflecting the heritage of the Swedish art-glass industry. Cocoon meets all of the brief’s criteria: it is daring, cutting edge and truly innovative in its focus on social and environmental issues.”
Rickard will receive a prize of €5000 and a six-month paid internship at one of Electrolux’s global design centres. I look forward to seeing what other ideas he has in store…
